  • GCMS gets new band director

    Andrew McGrannahan has been hired as a music teacher and band director of Grant County Middle School.

    McGrannahan began his new job on Sept. 23.

    He is  a graduate of the University of Kentucky where he earned his bachelor’s degree in music education and master’s in music performance.


    Caleb Brinker is the Grant County High School Youth Performance Award winner for September.

    He is a senior at GCHS and is the grandson of Melinda and Douglas Brinker of Corinth.

    Extra-curricular activities: I am the vice president of the Future Business Leaders of America.

    Community involvement: I have participated in many community activities such as Marigold Day, Derby Day and I assist with roadside cleanup.

    Name of competition:  Ryle Tournament of Bands
    Location and date:  Ryle High School in Union. Sept. 21, 2013
    Ranking and any awards: Preliminary competition - first place and sixth overall in finals competition.

    Names and number of bands participating: Six bands-Class 1A - Beechwood; Class 4A - Grant Count; Class 5A - Madison Central, Tates Creek, Lafayette (Grand Champions) and Milford.

    Score: Finals performance score was 67.95

    Location and date:  Shelby County high school; Shelbyville, Kentucky

    Name of competition: Bourbon County Invitational

    Location and date:  Bourbon County High School in Paris.

  • GC Band places third at Beechwood

    Name of competition: Beechwood Festival of Bands

    Location and date: Sept. 7 at Beechwood High School, Ft. Mitchell, Kentucky

    Ranking and any awards: Preliminary competition - first place and swept in all Captions; third place Overall in finals competition and won Best Visual Performance and Overall Effect Captions

    Names and number of bands participating: Six bands - Class 4A - Mercer, Grant County
    Class 5A - Ryle (Reserve Grand Champion), Dixie, Campbell County and Eastern High School (Grand Champion)

    Musical selections: Dramatic Prelude; Aegean Festival Overture; Fields of Gold; Third Vortex

    How would you describe the show: There is a bird cage. There is a lot of gold. It’s going to be interesting.

    Biggest competition in your class this year: Hazard, Murray, Beechwood, Paris, Harlan, Owensboro Catholic, Mayfield....and of course, ourselves.
