  • Community hears Ark developers

    Rumors were squashed, concerns were heard and questions answered during an Aug. 9 public meeting about the $150 million Ark Encounter project coming to Williamstown.

    The community listening session drew approximately 500 attendees who heard details on the project and had a chance to offer their input as it moves closer to breaking ground.

    It didn’t take long for Mike Zovath, senior vice president of Answers in Genesis, to tackle any controversy surrounding the Ark Encounter.

  • Country Grill set to re-open after fire

    The Country Grill in Dry Ridge will reopen Aug. 11 after an electrical fire forced the restaurant to close for more than two months.

    “We’re excited,” said owner Mike Hare. “Everyone’s excited about getting reopened. Everywhere we go, people are asking when we are reopening. We’re ready to go.”

    The fire broke out on June 6.

    Hare said the employees smelled smoke and then noticed a haze in the dining room just after lunch.

    The source of the smoke eventually was found in the attic above the kitchen.

  • ZOMBIES invade county for movie

    An infestation of zombies recently invaded Grant County as a movie crew came to town to film the western horror film “Revelation Trail.”

    The film, directed by John Gibson of Ft. Thomas, shot footage at on the farm of Judy Mullins and at Mullins Log Cabin in Berry.

    “It was just wild to look out my windows and see zombies and cowboys sitting on my front porch, walking up and down my drive, in the fields, just everywhere,” Mullins said.

    Grant County Public Library

    The Grant County Public Library will be closed on Tuesday, Aug. 9 and Wednesday, Aug. 10 for staff training.
    No materials will be due Aug. 8 through Aug. 13.

  • ARK UPDATE: Public Q&A set for Aug. 9

    Grant County residents can have their questions answered and hear details about the Ark Encounter project coming to Williamstown.

    The City of Williamstown will be holding a Community Listening Session from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Aug. 9 at the Williamstown High School cafeteria to give an update on the project.

  • Jonesville bank to close

    The Grant County Deposit Bank Jonesville branch is set to close January 2012. The Jonesville community may be a casualty of the national economic and regulatory climate.

    “New banking regulations that are coming down the pike, and plus we’re having to compete—we’re the only bank in Grant County that is independent, all the other banks are regional banks.” said Tom McCandless, president of Grant County Deposit Bank. “Given that—we’re having to consolidate operations somewhat in order to be competitive.”

Some of them involve pets. I love animals–I have four dogs (two outside, two inside), plus a grand-dog named Gus who visits from Lexington. Gus is a 6-month old Labrador that’s as big as a 6-year-old kid. Bella and Barkley are my two little Yorkies that live in the house with us. Or, I should say, we live in Bella and Barkley’s house!

  • Grant County Martial Arts celebrates 20 years

    Grant County Martial Arts is kicking and punching in to its 20th  year of business. The martial arts school in Dry Ridge teaches Shaolin, Tai Chi and in the fall basic mixed martial arts will be offered.


    Daniel Lester, the previous owner, passed Grant County Martial Arts to its second owner, Kevin Brandenburg in its 19th year of business.

    Brandenburg has owned the martial arts school for a little over a year and is a Sifu, or teacher, at the martial arts school. He has been with the company for 13 years and is a second degree black belt.

  • HELP US, PLEASE!

    Paws will be running through the grass and digging in the dirt soon at the Grant County Animal Shelter. Eight large play areas are being built to accommodate the adult dogs at the shelter, which means they will stand a better chance to find a permanent home.

    “Play yards makes the dogs more adoptable because it’ll allow them to exercise and they won’t be as excitable when people come to look at them,” said Marsha Chaney, animal shelter director.

  • Speedway brings $$$ to Grant businesses

    A historical event like the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series can have an impact for miles, not just around the track, but also for an impact in the local economy.

    Grant County felt the impact at the hotels and restaurants, as many were booked in advance of the race, some just an hour and a half after the announcement last year.

    “Everybody sold out,” said Karen McIntire, general manager of Hampton Inn. “The fans caught us before we could even think about changing our rates.”
