  • For 24 hours a day, 365 days a year since 1937, in rain sleet, snow and the sweltering heat, men guard the resting place of three unnamed service members in Arlington National Cemetery.
Jonathan Gatewood of Dry Ridge joined the armed forces after he graduated Grant County High School two years ago. After extensive training he was chosen for the 3rd U.S. Infantry Regiment, known as “The Old Guard.”
“These guys want to be here, they work hard to stay here,” Sergeant of the Guard, Sgt. 1st Class Tanner Welch said.

  • Here at the newspaper we never know what kind of conversation we’ll have when the phone rings.
Recently, as I picked up the phone a woman blurted out, “Do you believe God talks to you through your dreams?”

My first thought: Is this a trick question? Does she believe it or does she believe it’s hocus pocus hooey balooey?
My second thought: I hope she didn’t dream that God wants her to run me over with a forklift.

  • Some folks are hard of hearing.  I don’t mean that they are in need of a hearing aid (what? What was that? Speak up!) but rather that they have a hard time hearing the truth.  For some, the reasons are plain.  They don’t want to hear.  Like Jesus told the religious leaders of His day that they couldn’t hear the truth because they had no room for the truth.  For others, the reasons are deeper.  It goes back to some prejudice, some pain, or some type of anger that keeps them from hearing what God is saying.

  • Every once in a while, like 20 or 50 times a day, I wonder if I’ll ever get better.
I wonder if my faith will ever grow deeper or stronger, if I’ll ever have more passion for God, more desire for holiness.
Sometimes I think I must surely be the sorriest excuse for a Christian in the history of Christendom.
