  • When Cody Gabbert heard that Mason-Corinth Elementary was holding a penny drive to benefit the Grant County Relay for Life, he was interested in giving.

    Gabbert had collected $119 and donated it all to the American Cancer Society.

    “I wanted to help. I donated with pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters,” Gabbert said.

    Gabbert is now a second grade student at Mason-Corinth Elementary.

  • James and Thelma Porter of Independence, formerly of Williamstown, celebrated their 68th wedding anniversary on July 31.

    They were married in Williamstown in 1941.

    The couple has a daughter, Kellie Willoby of Burlington and a son, John, of Homosassa, Fla. Their son, Jim, of Walton, is deceased.

    The Porters have eight grandchildren, nine great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. 

  • Mr. and Mrs. Charles Gruen of Paint Lick announce the engagement and forthcoming marriage of their daughter, Vanessa Janette Gruen, to Billy Wilson May, son of Mr. and Mrs. Eric May of Lancaster.

    Gruen is the granddaughter of Mildred Ferguson of Dry Ridge.

    Gruen is a graduate of Garrard County High School, Eastern Kentucky University and is currently pursuing a master’s degree in communication disorders at EKU.

    May is a graduate of Garrard County High School and is employed by DocuBit in Lancaster.

  • Matthew and Nadia Vazquez-Berry of Dry Ridge announce the birth of their first child.

    Zeppelin Wolfe Vazquez-Berry was born at 2:43 p.m. Jan. 13, 2009 at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Edgewood.

    He weighed 8 pounds and 3.4 ounces and was 21.5 inches long.

    His maternal grandparents are Gustavo and Virginia Vazquez of Dry Ridge. His maternal great grandparents are Virginia Elkins of Temple, Texas, the late James Alton Garrett of Edmonton, Ky. and Gustavo and Gloria Vazquez of Spain.

  •  ARTS

    • Community Enrichment Through The Arts (CETA) is sponsoring Shakespeare in the Park, a performance of Romeo and Juliet at 7 p.m. Aug. 4 at Grant County Park in Crittenden. The event is free and concessions will be available. Rain moves the performance inside the Welfare House. The Grant County Public Library will host a workshop with the performers at 5 p.m.

  • Joe Stewart, 14, of Dry Ridge has signed an acting contract with Frederick Levy Management 101 of Los Angeles and Bryan Leder, BLT of New York.

    Stewart recently attended The Mike Beaty Talent Expo in Dallas with his agent, Jake Lang of Wings Model Management in Cincinnati. He received 16 callbacks, including Nickelodeon and Disney for his performances in monologue, cold read, two person scene, runway and athletic wear.

    He will be leaving later this month for New York where he will be auditioning for TV and film.

  • Mallory Bishop of Williamstown and Timothy Moffett of Crittenden were among the 80 high school students from across Kentucky who participated in the 38th annual Kentucky Rural Electric Washington Youth Tour held June 12 through June 19 in Washington, DC.

    Selected on the basis of an application centered on academic achievement and community service, Bishop and Moffett were sponsored by Owen Electric Cooperative.

  • Mike Franks and Rhonda Robinson of Crittenden announce the marriage of their daughter, Ashley Robinson to Adam Kincer, son of Cody Kincer and Lisa Myer of Butler.

    The bride is also the daughter of the late Rodney Robinson.

    Robinson is a nurse and will start pre-medical studies this fall in Denver, Co.

    Kincer is an airman in the U.S. Air Force based at Buckley AFB in Colorado. He returned in May from a tour of duty in Iraq.

  • • The Grant County High School Class of 1979 will be having their 30th class reunion in August.
