  • Wilson joins U.S. Army

    Shane A. Wilson has joined the United States Army under the delayed entry program.

    Wilson, a 2006 graduate of Simon Kenton High School, in Independence, will report to Fort Sill, Lawton, Okla., for basic training in April 2010.

    He is the son of Cheryl Wilson of Independence and Hubert Wilson of Crittenden.

  • Krupinski completes U.S. Navy basic training

    Navy Seaman Rick A. Krupinski, son of Louana E. Plunkett of Dry Ridge and Rick A. Krupinski of Williamstown recently completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill.

    During the eight-week program, Krupinski completed a variety of training which included classroom study and practical instruction on naval customs, first aid, firefighting, water safety and survival, and shipboard and aircraft safety. An emphasis was also placed on physical fitness.

  • Seaman Apprentice completes U.S. Navy basic training

    Navy Seaman Apprentice Luke N. McClure, son of Barbara S. Elliot of Dry Ridge, Ky. and Jeffrey S. McClure of Crittenden, Ky., recently completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill.

    During the eight-week program, McClure completed a variety of training which included classroom study and practical instruction on naval customs, first aid, firefighting, water safety and survival, and shipboard and aircraft safety. An emphasis was also placed on physical fitness.

  • Epling, boy, Nov. 7

    Mike Epling and Ronni-Ann Miller would like to announce the birth of their first child.

    Landon Michael Epling was born at 4:47 p.m. on Nov. 7, 2009 at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Florence. He weighed 7 pounds and 1.6 ounces and was 20.75 inches long.

    His maternal grandparents are Mark Miller of Dry Ridge and Tammy Ashcraft Lonaker of Crittenden.

    His paternal grandparents are the late Michael Reed Epling and Debbie Epling of Elkhorn City.

    Landon was welcomed home by friends and family.

  • Davis, girl, Sept. 4

    Jonathan and Patrisha Davis of Cincinnati would like to announce the birth of their first child.

    Bianca Mae Davis was born at 4:09 a.m. on Sept. 4, 2009 at St. Elizabeth Hospital. She weighed 7 pounds and 10.5 ounces and was 20.5 inches long.

    Her maternal grandparents are Jonathan Radford and Melissa Smith of Bellevue. Her maternal great grandparents are John and Janis Smith of Crittenden.

    Her paternal grandparents are Jonathan Davis Jr. and Glenda Buchanon of Indiana.

    Bianca was welcomed home by Uncle Dion Piceno, Uncle Daniel Piceno and grandparents.

  • The big adventure

    A journey begins with one step.

    For Beth and Ed Lorenz, former residents of Dry Ridge, that one step took them thousands of miles from home, family and even Kentucky.

    They are living in Vanuatu, an island in the Pacific Ocean, east of Australia. It was the site of the television series Survivor in 2004.

    How does a couple from the Bluegrass state find themselves living in a completely different culture with limited access to home and their families?

    For the Lorenz’s, it was the Peace Corps.

  • GC Extension Office plans “Chocolate” class

    The Grant County Extension Office will host an hour long class on “Chocolate,” at noon Feb.9.  The class will be held at the extension office on 105 Baton Rouge Road.  Topics to be covered include: The origin and history of chocolate, the chocolate making process and types of chocolate, chocolate substitutions, melting, tempering and storing. Finally, that age old question will be considered: “Is chocolate good for you?”
