  • Who are the ‘church people’?

Recently, someone passed on a bit of gossip to me.
This person said, according to reliable sources, a certain person at a certain local church did something that, while doesn’t technically violate the letter of any of the Ten Commandments, is unseemly for, as this person put it, “church people.”

That same week my pastor said someone came to him and informed him that a certain person who was attending the pastor’s class with the intent of joining the church was, indeed, not a very nice person, maybe even a despicable one.

  • When Jesus shows up

When it comes to serving at my church, I have two jobs.

As I’ve mentioned before, I’m a communion server. I’m also emcee for the monthly senior ministry events, dinners and such. With a microphone in hand I quiet them down, tell a few senior-related jokes, dismiss the people at the tables to go get their food and introduce featured guests.
Sometimes I refill cups of iced tea or clear plates away.
Basically, I just show up and try not to mess things up so badly that God can’t fix it.

  • Embrace your not-perfectness

One day at the library, a book fell off a shelf and hit a boy named Milo Crinkley on the head.

The title, “Be A Perfect Person In Just Three Days,” was just what he needed.
Wanting more than anything to be perfect, Milo checked the book out and set to do everything the author, Dr. K. Pinkerson Silverfish prescribed.
So begins the 1982 children’s book “Be A Perfect Person In Just Three Days” by Stephen Manes.

    • Rhonda’s message was from Colossians 3:1-17. Christians should clothe themselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience, bearing with each other and forgiving one another as the Lord has forgiven us. The church met together five evenings to pray as we believe “prayer changes things!”

  • Resolve to allow love of Christ in our lives

So, it’s a new year. 2014. Hard to believe, huh? I guess that means it’s time to make resolutions again. What does that word mean, anyway? Well, I looked it up for you.

“Resolution” means determination: firmness of mind or purpose. That seems pretty serious! Is that how we normally approach New Year’s resolutions? With firmness of mind? With determination? I think we mean well. We start out well. But, eventually our determination wanes. Our mind gets flabby, along with our waistlines!
