  • You don’t know what you can do

This past week I visited the nursing home in Grant County and made a new friend named Mabel. Mabel is probably around ninety years old and she gets around in a wheelchair. She was embarrassed to smile in front of us because she thought her teeth needed some work. But nothing about Mabel needed any work at all.

  • Growing up

Growing up is something all kids and teenagers want to do.  Parents long for a day when their children grow up become self-sufficient, independent and have a hopeful future.  Growing up from childhood to adulthood is a process.  Part of the process of growing up is making mistakes, learning, struggling and overcoming.  Growing up includes starting middle school, getting a drivers license, high school graduation, college graduation, marriage and on and on.  Those are proud moments that can define our lives.

  • Beauty isn’t everything

We human beings are incredibly quick to assume the worst. As teenagers, we throw tantrums and slam our bedroom doors when our parents ground us, forgetting that they only want the best for us. Having spent most of my college years involved in youth ministry, I have heard both teenage boys and teenage girls pull the “my parents hate me and don’t get me” card. But I have also witnessed many parents tearfully lament after hearing their child say, “I hate you” for the first time. Usually, these words are uttered after a petty argument or misunderstanding.
