  • Start looking for things to be thankful fora

When I served a church in Mississippi, I was the recipient of an amazing gift. A couple in my church knew that I was a fan (fanatical and crazy…according to my wife) of the Kentucky Wildcats.  They came to me after church one day and said, “Barry, we know how much you love Kentucky and though we can’t stand them, we want to give you two tickets to a basketball game between the Mississippi State Bulldogs and the Kentucky Wildcats.

  • Being thankful

Every Thanksgiving we reflect on what we are thankful for in our lives. We often come up with the same generic answers year after year, family, friends, church, often adding different organizations to our list. We all have this list. We were taught in kindergarten to make it and we have done so ever since, in our heads if not on paper. And there is nothing wrong with being thankful for our possessions but is that what Thanksgiving or “Giving Thanks” is really about?

  • The ‘broken beautiful’

After the March 2011 tsunami in Japan that killed nearly 20,000 people, a woman named Sue Plumb Takamoto was out clearing debris in a field in the coastal city of Ishinomaki.
As she picked among the ruins, her eyes kept catching sight of the colorful shards of broken pottery, the only remains of the city’s tearooms and kitchens.

  • Life lessons in the mud

Although I personally don’t get the fascination with running races through mud, these days lots of people do.
A few years ago, my two daughters did a mud race together. My oldest daughter, Alison, said the obstacles freaked her out and she doesn’t like climbing cargo nets and was leery of leaping over fire.

  • Submit to spiritual authority

“Without faith it is impossible to please him,” proclaims the Bible in the 11th chapter of Hebrews. These words should penetrate all of our hearts as I would be the first to admit that the measure of faith that God has so graciously given to me could stand to be built upon. However, there is a particular area in our lives in which God has purposed for our faith to grow, and that can be found in the words spoken by the Centurion of Matthew 8:5-10.

  • The good life

Christians would get a lot further with their political and cultural recommendations if they were known as living examples of the good life, the life well-lived, and a morally flourishing and thus joyful community. But what is this “good life?” To begin with we should act as a community of grace, and as Christians we are uniquely positioned to demonstrate.
