  • Checklist for winter garden prep: Part 2

    Several years ago I made the mistake of leaving the water pump in the barn instead of storing it in the basement.  Well, I found out why Daddy always stored it in the basement during the cold days of winter. When I got the pump out to do some irrigation the following summer the primer tank had split right open. A little bit of moisture was left in the tank and it froze. The tank is made of cast iron so imagine what a little moisture might do to your favorite terracotta pot.

    • Sept. 15 - It’s “New” Beef - Learn about “new” cuts of beef and see a cutting demonstration at 7 p.m. by Dr. Gregg Rentfrow, Extension Meat Specialist. Learn to buy and use beef more economically. There will be prizes for everyone, plus door prizes.
    • Sept.19 - Quilting Group - The Happy Stitchers Quilting Group meets from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the extension office.

  • Homemakers ‘roll out red carpet’

    The Grant County Extension Homemakers held their 64th Annual Meeting on April 28.

    The Red Carpet Night included yearly awards, a visit from Abraham (Nelson Doyle) and Mary Todd Lincoln (Joyce Doyle, extension agent for 4-H and youth development) and a spoof spring fashion show.

  • Garden Connection planned for March 3

    Master Gardener instructor Sharon Tepe will demonstrate Seed Starting Basics from 6 to 8 p.m. March 3 at the Grant County Extension Office, 105 Baton Rouge Road in Williamstown.
    Tepe, an avid gardener, graduated from the Master Gardener training class at the Civic Garden Center in Cincinnati. The class consisted of 50 hours of classroom training with the topics ranging from botany and soils to pests and diseases and a hosts of other gardening related topics.

  • Extension offers community classes

    The following classes will be taught at the Grant County Extension Service, 105 Baton Rouge Road, Williamstown.
    • Bed Bug Bedlam
    How to prevent and get rid of bed bugs will be taught from 4:30 to 6 p.m. April 7 at the Grant County Library. This class is co-sponsored by Grant and Kenton County Extension Services. Call the Grant County Extension office to register.
     • Quilting Classes
    Quilting classes will be taught from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on the first and third Monday of each month.
