  • Follow your instinct

    If there was anything that I came to understand more profoundly this year it would have to be the power of instinct: mine, our animals and the forces of ideologies of which I agree and disagree.  I reread my year end column from 2011 which reminded me of where I was 12 months ago; it helps me better appreciate where I am today.  It seems we didn’t do too badly, after all, and it’s all because both Andy and I recognize the power of instinct.

  • Starlings flock

    Last Sunday I felt like I was under siege!  There were starlings everywhere; so much so that I feared being splattered with poop at every turn.  The surprising thing about starlings is that they are everywhere yet not from here.  It’s another story of one good intention going bad. Apparently back in 1890, in honor of a Shakespeare festival in New York City’s Central Park, 60 European starlings were released.  The following year another 40 were released and today the bird is one of the most numerous species in North America.

    Dry Ridge family physician Darl T. Shipp, M.D. has joined Summit Medical Group. Dr. Shipp will continue to see patients at the same location in Dry Ridge. Dr. Shipp specializes in family medicine and is a native of Grant County. Shipp is also a graduate of Mason High School.

  • Corinth grocery could become reality again

    Corinth will get it’s grocery store back.  That is, once Terry and Linda Allen, owners of Allen’s Country Store get through the legal hoops to rebuild.
    The next step is a City Board of Adjustments meeting, which will be held Dec. 13 at the Corinth City Building.

  • Live or live cut for the holidays?

    Picking out the perfect Christmas tree was something that I used to take very serious: all the cleaning and moving of furniture and packing of boxes and light-stringing and unstringing required a tree worth the effort! I have scaled back in recent years but still see the fun in finding a tree that fits your space and holds precious ornaments with style.

  • ANOTHER PLACE IN TIME 12-13-12

    Marian Wilhoite is the cheesiest. That’s what the letter telling her she had won the “I am a Velveeta Mom” said. The letter won Wilhoite $1,000 and a six-month supply of Velveeta cheese. Wilhoite was named one of 18 grand prize, first place winners. With four children Wilhoite has always used Velveeta.

  • TURNING BACK THE CLOCK 12-06-12

    Students, staff and parents of Dry Ridge Elementary School have a reason to be smiling. DRE was named a National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence an honor shared with only three other schools in Kentucky. This award took a lot of hard work from the staff, administrators and parents.

  • Composting makes fall clean-up easy, efficient

    Today most gardeners do understand the process of composting organic matter and the value of adding this material to their gardens.  However, there are still many who don’t do it because they think it is hard to get started.  Well, fall garden clean-up, leaf raking and a little kitchen debris may be all you need to get a healthy compost pile started this season. Mother Nature will provide the material if you provide the management.

  • Williamstown Baptist continues to feed the need for 15 years

    The volunteers of the Williamstown Baptist Church delivered more than 603 meals on Thanksgiving morning.

    “This has become part of Thanksgiving tradition for many people,” said Elizabeth Taylor, a volunteer for the church.

    This is the 15th year the Thanksgiving Day meals have been delivered all across Grant County.
