Why sit inside when there are options outside?
That’s what the 5th District Federation League of Kentucky Sportsmen is asking and that is why they are offering the ninth annual NRA Youth Sportsfest on June 20.
The Sportsfest will be from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Lloyd Wildlife Management Area in Crittenden and is for all Northern Kentucky youth from 9 to 18 years old.
With activities such as fishing, archery, rifle, muzzleloader, trap shooting, a trapping clinic and a turkey hunting clinic, the League of Kentucky Sportsmen is looking to get youth outside.
“The 5th District wanted to do something for young hunters and to promote shooting sports,” Deborah Price, chairperson for the Sportsfest, said. “It introduces them to all of the outdoor activities.”
Registration is required and is open until June 19. There is a $5 charge, which covers breakfast, lunch and a T-shirt, plus other possible prizes. Openings are limited to 150 and are first come, first serve. The event will happen, rain or shine.
With 108 youth taking part last year, the event also tries to tie in other area programs to show the youth what options are available once the Sportsfest is over.
“We try to get them into the 4-H shooting sports program because we’ve shown them what they can do and how they can continue it,” Price said. “We want people to get out and get involved.”
