WHS Band wins Class 2A Mid-States title

The Williamstown High School Band Of Spirit traveled to Northmont High School in Clayton, Ohio on Nov. 2 for the 2013 Mid-States Band Association’s Class 2A Mid-States Championships.

The contest started with 20 Class 2A Bands, including Kentucky, Ohio, and Indiana.

The WHS Band of Spirit was the fourth band to perform. However, their score of 81.9 held up throughout the preliminary competition and they claimed the first place going into the finals.
Eleven bands were selected and given an opportunity to perform in the evening’s finals competition. WHS was the sixth band to perform in the finals.

When the awards were announced, the WHS Band of Spirit was awarded Best Music, Best Visual, Best Effect, Best Percussion and the 2013 Mid-States Class 2A Championship with a score of 85.9. Carroll High School, from Ohio, finished second with a score of 82.40.
This is the first ever Mid-States Championship for the WHS Band of Spirit.
The band returned to Williamstown with a police escorted parade.

“What a great way to finish our season. I am so proud of our students, staff, parents, school, community, and the entire WHS Band of Spirit Nation,” said Chris Hedges, director.

“It was a tough contest. I knew that there were some very good bands in our class. It was a long day that included the cold, some rain and lots of walking. Our kids just pushed through and gave two great performances!”
MSBA is a consortium of High School band organizations in and around the Dayton, Ohio area. Membership is defined by participating in any MSBA sanctioned event during the competition season.

The WHS Band of Spirit qualified by participating in the MSBA sanctioned event at Simon Kenton High School on Oct. 5.
The WHS Band of Spirit will be performing on Nov. 8 at the Grant County vs. Williamstown Family Career Community Leaders of America Powderpuff Game for Autism Speaks.

The band then will be perform Nov. 11 during the school’s Veterans’ Day ceremony as well as on Dec.15, the WHS Band and Choirs will present their Holiday Spectacular at 2:30 p.m. in the WHS gym.
