Hello Grant County. My name is Matt Birkholtz and I am the new sports reporter for The Grant County News. I would like to share my story and how I got to this point in my life.

I am 24 years old and am from Aurora, Ind. I remember loving sports since I was 5 years old and can remember watching the Cincinnati Reds, pretending to be like Eric Davis and Barry Larkin, sliding into the television set as they won the 1990 World Series.

As I grew older and found I didn’t have enough skill to play professional sports, I decided with my passion for sports to find a way to stick around. When they imploded Riverfront Stadium, my home away from home, I heard on the radio that the Reds were having a job fair. I thought to myself this is a great way to get my foot in the door.

I worked there for five and a half seasons and figured I was going to be going into a sports management career during my time there, dreaming of becoming the general manager of the Reds.

When I transferred to Northern Kentucky University in the fall of 2006, after graduating from Cincinnati State Technical and Community College, a turning point in my life happened.

In my first semester at NKU, I saw an advertisement in the student newspaper, The Northerner, that they needed sports writers I knew I could write but had never done journalism writing, but figured I would give it a shot.

I started to fall in love with covering the sports teams at NKU and decided that I was going to change my career from sports business to journalism. I love the essence of being able to tell people a story.

I worked for The Northerner for three years and concluded my last semester as the print editor in chief.

When I heard about the position opening up here, I took the initiative to apply and get into the career I went to school for. I thank my family and my girlfriend, Jessie for supporting me and they are the reason I am here today.

I really love the Grant County area and I feel at home here, working at a small community newspaper that has a family-like atmosphere and I am really looking forward to getting to know the community here.
