The editorial team at the Grant County News works on a lot of special projects, which are above and beyond the normal weekly coverage provided in the Grant County News and Grant County Express.
We’ve put together special sections that contained a 24/7 look at Grant County which was chock full of photos from a 24-hour period in our community. We’ve also put together specialty sections such as one on the horse community, one on 4-H and an annual one devoted to inside our schools.
While special sections can be time consuming, they also offer us a chance to be creative and they can be fun.
I’m extremely excited about an upcoming special section, which will be dedicated to our veterans. This special publication will be published in November, just before Veteran’s Day on 11-11-11.
Everyone is invited to submit information about a veteran in their family. We have forms here at the News office and are happy to publish photos if they are also available.
The veteran can be living or deceased, active duty or retired. We just ask that they have some sort of Grant County connection and we consider a family member currently residing in the community as a connection.
We’ve been collecting veteran’s information since Memorial Day and have had a tremendous response, but we know once the publication is printed, we’ll have some people who call and ask why their relative, friend or neighbor was not included.
Please note that participation is completely voluntary. We have not actively sought the information other than to publish advertisements asking people to submit their information to us.
All information that will be contained in this special publication, other than a few stories we’ve found from some previous issues that may be featured in it, will have come from our readers and community.
If you haven’t heard about this project, time is running out for you to get your information in it. We’ve set a deadline for Call the News office at 859-824-3343 for more information.
Because the response has been so positive to this special section, we may decide to print one annually.
I’m especially excited about saluting our veterans because my father, step father and brother were military men. Several of my uncles also served in the military. My uncles, Elton and Roy, were part of the D-Day invasion.
I only regret that I never took time to speak to them about their time in service and sadly, I won’t have an opportunity to do that.
As with any special section, we need special content and advertisers willing to support the project. If you’d like to be included in what we believe is destined to become a keepsake, then call Ken Stone and he will assist you with placing an ad.
We hope you enjoy our tribute to veterans. Nov. 11 is just around the corner.
