Two Grant County High School students have been named to the 2010 Kentucky All-State Band.

The students, Lucas Hampton, a freshman and Heather Shelton, a junior, were chosen out of more than 800 student musicians at the band competition in December.

Hampton, 15, is the son of Earl and Rebecca Hampton of Glencoe. He plays bass clarinet and was surprised that he was chosen.

“Usually a freshman doesn’t get it,” Hampton said. “I was happy that I could represent my school.”

Hampton doesn’t necessarily plan on a career in music, but thinks it will benefit him in scholarship opportunities.

Shelton, 16, is the daughter of Jeff and Vikki Shelton of Crittenden. She plays the clarinet and this is her second consecutive year to win state honors.

“I was really excited because I went last year and made a lot of friends,” Shelton said. “I’m excited to go back and see them all.”

Shelton plans to pursue a double major in music education and music performance.

Both students performed at the Kentucky Convention Center in Louisville on Feb. 3-6. during the 2010 Kentucky Music Educators Association (KMEA) Conference, which has over 2,000 members.
