Rules, rules why so many rules?

Why are there so many rules in Christianity?
I heard from a friend the other day who said they wanted nothing to do with the church or Jesus or Christianity because there are too many rules to follow. If I can, allow me to let you in on a secret… the rules in Christianity are there to remind you that you are a sinner and cannot save yourself because you are not holy enough to be accepted by God on your own merit. The rules and the law in Christianity are there to show you your sinfulness and in turn, your need for a Savior. My answer to my friend was, “You are correct, there are too many rules to follow and keep all of them, (Gal 3:19-26) But Christianity is not
about keeping rules to appease God.” My answer took him by surprise because he knows that I am a pastor who believes the Bible is the authoritative Word of God.
The rest of our conversation went somewhat like this: Christianity is about the fact that Jesus Christ has kept all the rules, fulfilled the entire law, took your penalty for not keeping the rules by dying on the cross, and rose again to show that if we have faith in him that we will triumph over both, the rules and Satan. The one rule we are under today is whether we believe and trust in Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior, if we do then we have a relationship with Him and are promised the Holy Spirit
and heaven.
If we do not then we do not have a relationship with Him and are promised an eternity separate from the love of God. The law is there to show us that we cannot work for heaven, do enough good stuff to get to heaven or know the right people to get into heaven. The
law is there to drive us to Christ. People who do not like church because of the rules do not understand and do not like the fact that they are there to drive us to Jesus. The sad thing is however, many churches today make Christianity more about the
rules than about Jesus.
Focus upon Jesus and not the rules. If we are focused on Jesus then following the rules becomes an afterthought in our lives because following Jesus
is the rule that overrides all the other rules. Jesus said, “seek ye first the kingdom of God and his righteousness and all these things will be added unto you.” Seek Jesus instead of following rules because you cannot follow the rules without following
