The Williamstown track and field team closed out its 2013 season on May 10 at the Class 1A Region 4 Championships hosted by Walton-Verona High School at the Walton Verona Athletic Complex located in Verona. The top two in each event and the next 10 best performances among the seven Class 1A regions compiled results qualify for the KHSAA State Track and Field Championships that will be held at the University of Louisville on May 17-18.
If the competition in Class 1A Region 4 was not difficult enough already, the weather leading up to the meet simply added another challenge to contend with. Officials delayed the start of the meet one hour to allow the heaviest threat of storms to move through the area.
Once the meet was allowed to commence, Williamstown would be represented in three events at the 2013 Class 1A Region 4 Championships. Senior Alex Prokopchak, attempting to earn her second straight Class 1A State Championship berth, closed out her high school career by earning a pair of eighth place finishes in the long jump and triple jump competitions. She leaped 14-feet, 5-inches in the long jump and followed that up with a jump of 30-feet, 2-inches in the triple jump. The top six from this region in both horizontal jump events would advance to the state meet.
On the track, Hannah Kinsey, a junior, competed in the 800m run, which included a field of 11 state qualifiers after the results were gathered from around the state. She finished 14th with a season best time of 2:42.27.
