The Grant County and Williamstown school districts have agreed to kick off fundraising for the 2013 Grant County Relay For Life with the Coaches vs. Cancer event held during the Grant County vs. Williamstown boys and girls basketball games.
The first game is scheduled for Dec. 4 at GCHS. A portion of the proceeds from each of the four games will be donated to the relay, which is the signature fundraising event for the American Cancer Society.
The Relay For Life, a 12-hour event, which is planned for Friday, May 31, 2013 features teams from local businesses, churches, families and organizations that raise money to fund cancer programs and research. Many of the teams work year-round on their fundraising efforts.
As part of the Coaches vs. Cancer event, each school will be “painting their gym purple” for the games and the community is invited to get into the spirit of relay by wearing purple those nights.
Cancer survivors will be recognized during half time of the games.
The RFL committee will be selling t-shirts and relay Christmas ornaments and have an information booth about the relay and how to get involved at each game. Donations will also be accepted.
To make the Coaches vs. Cancer games even more of a competition, Williamstown Superintendent Sally Skinner and Grant County Superintendent Ron Livingood are getting into a purple mood by agreeing to a contest.
The superintendent from the district that raises less money over the course of the four games has agreed to have a purple pie in the face in support of the relay at the last game of the series on Jan. 21 at WHS.
