The Williamstown volleyball team had found themselves down before in third sets.

They had been pushed to the limit in several matches during the regular season, but had earned the confidence that comes with pulling out close matches.

So when they found themselves trailing Owen County 23-18 in the third set during the district tournament on Oct. 13, they maintained their composure before reeling off seven straight points on their way to three set win (17-25, 25-17, 25-23).

With the win, the Lady Demons earned the first region tournament berth in the program’s history.

“We are ecstatic that we’re advancing to the region tournament,” coach Wes Staff said. “This is a huge accomplishment for this team. They’ve worked hard to get this far. The girls knew that we had to work harder than Owen County and that it didn’t matter if we had beaten them in the past.”

The Lady Demons entered the district tournament as the number one seed, but started their match against Owen County sluggish and it took a set before they showed why they had earned the number one seed during the regular season.

“We didn’t start out well against Owen County, but it pushed us and taught us to go to the extra level,” junior Chelsea West said. “We came into the match a little overconfident, but we learned that we have to focus from the start and can’t be overconfident.”

The Lady Demons started the district championship against Walton-Verona by taking the first set before dropping the second set. They weren’t able to muster any final set magic, falling 25-20, 14-25, 7-25.

“It was disappointing because we learned that we can’t always pull ourselves back up when we get down,” senior Sara Moreland said.

Although they lost in the district championship, the girls are still enjoying their winning season after only earning one win last year.

“This year has been exciting,” Moreland said. “Our team has been together for what feels like forever. The seniors, juniors and sophomores have gotten closer and this seems different than every other year. We all trust each other and have confidence in each other and it showed this year.”

Moreland and West were named to the district all-tournament team.

The Lady Demons’ season came to an end with a loss to North Oldham in the first round of the region tournament on Oct. 19.

“The girls played as hard as they could,” Staff said. “I’m proud that they made it to regionals and advanced that far.”
