Early in their games against Silver Grove and Eminence, the GCHS girls’ basketball team had their opponents under control.
In their first game of the Grant County Invitational, the Lady Braves led 9-0 after the first quarter on their way to 24-5 lead after the first half. Silver Grove was held scoreless for the first 12 minutes of the game, which Grant County won 55-24 on Dec. 18.
“It was nice to come out and be aggressive,” coach Darrell Guffey said. “We didn’t come out strong early, but our defense picked us up. It was really good.”
Their game against Silver Grove was only the second game the girls have played at home and they started slow. The Lady Braves relied on their defense to shut down Silver Grove.
“We need to learn to settle down and make shots early,” Guffey said. “It took us a minute to settle down. When we play without reaching, we’re a pretty solid defense that can cause some problems.”
With their huge lead, Guffey was able to get his bench players game experience.
“It was good for us to play younger players.
The Lady Braves followed their opening win with another against Eminence. Grant County again came out strong defensively as they built an 18-2 lead after the first quarter and easily defeated Eminence on Dec. 20.
