The GCHS JROTC team with 50 cadets, traveled to and competed against 10 other high school teams in southern Ohio on Nov. 7 and Nov. 8.
The competition started on Friday evening at Dan Beard Boy Scout Camp in Milford, Ohio and concluded Sunday afternoon with an awards ceremony. There were eight Army JROTC teams and two Navy JROTC teams, one with Marine Corps instructors, competing.
Grant County’s JROTC teams preformed in an outstanding manner demonstrating excellence at the highest level. Their demonstrated performance netted GCHS JROTC a total of 15 trophies, spread across nine different categories of evaluated performance with an accessed point value. Two of the trophies were for the overall competition championship awards.
Grant County won the first place overall championship award for team one and third place overall championship award for team two.
Other categories of competition and awards won were:
•First place - cross country rescue course, one rope bridge competition, day compass course challenge and academic map reading test.
• Second place - academic map reading test, army physical fitness test and mystery event.
• Third place - one rope bridge competition, day compass challenge, academic map reading test, mystery event, raider decathlon and orienteering course.
The next competition will be Nov. 22 at Eastern Kentucky University in Richmond. The GCHS JROTC will be defending the championship title from last year. The public is invited to attend.
