The birthday of our country will be celebrated in a couple of weeks. July 4 is a day we take time to celebrate our freedom and the birth of our nation. We are thankful to live in country that gives us great freedom and opportunity. Among the fireworks, the cookouts and the day off work, my hope is that we celebrate our country and freedom with opportunity in mind.
As Christians in America we have one of the greatest opportunities of any people in the world. The opportunity that is given to us; is the ability to share the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Religious freedom is something that we too often take for granted and sadly have underutilized.
Some of the largest growth in Christianity is found in countries that do not have religious freedom and where Christians are persecuted. The growth of Christianity in America generally has not seen the kind of growth that persecuted areas have seen. One would think that with freedom comes opportunity and with opportunity comes action. This is not always the case. Often opportunity is only seized upon under the stress and in understanding the immediacy of the need.
Our call as believers is to go make disciples. Jesus in Matthew 28, gives us this commission and promised to go with us. The call to make disciples should be first job on our list and one of the primary actions of the church. We have the ability to do what God has called us to do, we have the opportunity to do what God has called us to do, we have the resources to do what God has called us to do and we have the freedom to do what God has called us to do. He has called us to go and tell about the good news of the death, resurrection and promised return of Christ.
So this fourth of July, after you have ate hamburgers, hotdogs, experienced fireworks and celebrated the birth of our nation, stop and realize the blessing God has given us. In America we have all we need to live out the great commission. We have the opportunity, let’s seize upon it.
Tell your friends, tell your neighbors, tell your relatives, get involved in evangelism at your church. Religious freedom was paid for at the birth of our country, may we never take it for granted.
