Local soccer fans have plenty to be excited about with the 4th Annual Dry Ridge Toyota Cup set to bring some of the best soccer action in the state to Grant County this weekend.
Grant County and Gallatin County headline the boys’ tournament from the 8th Region, while Conner and defending champion Villa Madonna represent the 9th Region.
Grant County’s Lady Braves will defend their championship against 8th Region foes Spencer County and Gallatin County in the girls’ brackets. Spencer County is ranked at or near the top of the 8th Region with eight wins, including a perfect 3-0 mark against regional opponents.
Grant County boys’ soccer coach Garret Griffith, who coached the girls’ team to the Toyota Cup championship a year ago, said he expects action in both the boys’ and girls’ brackets to be top-notch.
“The competition is going to be really tough,” he said. “Conner is the team to beat for the boys, without question. But, I believe we can give them a run for their money. And I hope we get a chance to prove it.”
To get its chance at Conner, a team that beat the Braves in the preseason Soccer-rama as well as in the first round of last year’s Toyota Cup, Grant County must first get past Gallatin County, a team which has won only two times this season, both times against Owen County.
But Griffith knows his team must not overlook Gallatin or the Braves could be foced to watch the championship game from the stands.
“We just have to focus one game at a time and not be looking ahead or thinking about other situations,” he said. “We just need to focus on the game at hand and play them one game at a time and we’ll be fine.”
