Tomorrow I will say goodbye to my wife and wish her well. I will drop my kids off at school and tell them I love them. I will make the short drive to work. It will be like most other days.
Friday, in Newtown, Connecticut it seemed like a normal day too. We were all taken aback and deeply saddened at the tragedy that struck that sleepy town last Friday. Our hearts and prayers go out to them. We cannot even imagine what they are feeling.
Senseless tragedy and the obvious presence of evil makes us pause. We pause to try and make sense of the world and the hurt. The reality is, it doesn’t make sense. Evil is just that….nonsensical. However as believers, we are not destroyed by such evil. We are saddened and hurt but not destroyed. The reason is because we have a Savior. Jesus endured evil from men and he overcame. He defeated death, hell, and the grave.
Jesus died for you, for me and for all who would put their trust in him. He has promised to return and reign eternal in a new heaven and new earth. That is where our comfort is found.
The people in Newtown who are dealing with tragic loss need hope, need healing and need the presence of the Holy Spirit. The grace of God is the only prescription. It is our only prescription in times of trouble, hurt and despair. I ask you today, where will you turn? Turn to the Lord, for he is our only Hope. May God bless the people in Newtown and may he bless you this Christmas season. May God help us in an ever-changing world.
