The Grant County Middle Soccer team won the Owen County Classic on April 20.
“I was very happy that we won,” said Coach Garrett Griffith. “One of our main goals at the beginning of the season was to win the tournament.”
The GCMS soccer team has 25 players. At the Owen County Classic, they competed against Grant County, Carroll County and Owen County. The GCMS Braves beat Carroll 5 -1 and Owen 6 - 0.

“Overall it was team effort,” Griffith said. “Matthew Barnett was a key player as he is our last defender and controls our defense, so to only allow one goal in two games show how great we played as a team and how strong Matthew is as a leader.”
Griffith said Bo Cobb and True Williams were important in the win because of their ability on ball possessions and supplying the ball to the mid-fielders and forwards.

Four GCMS players, Ethan Howe, Jose Barajas, Stuart Smith and Nathan Yeager, were selected to the All-Tournament Team for their performance in the tournament.
Griffith said his team is experienced and that is their strength.
“Last year we won 11 games and returned the majority of players from that team,” Griffith said.

“We possess the ball well, play good defense and we have players who are very good at being in the right places to score goals.”
The team is focusing on bettering their first ball touches to help with possession and making better supporting runs.

“We have six games left in the season and our goal is win the remaining games and finish the year with 12 wins,” Griffith said.
