GCMS 8th graders to hear from high school students

-A A +A

How do students in middle school answer difficult questions about their future such as:
• What do I want to do?  What interests do I have that could translate into a career?
• What types of jobs will be in high demand?  What training, education, and skills are needed?  How do I obtain those skills?
• What opportunities are available at Grant County High School?  What do I need to do now to ensure my best opportunities later?

To help answer these important questions, Grant County High School and Grant County Middle School will host a series of events known as “Operation Preparation” during February and March.  Operation Preparation is a state-wide effort of the Kentucky Department of Education and the Department of Workforce Development intended to provide an opportunity for schools, students, parents, and communities to work together to provide academic and career advising for students.
During Operation Preparation, Grant County Middle School eighth graders will have the opportunity to hear current GCHS students share about electives and programs offered at Grant County High School.  Additionally, every Grant County Schools eighth and ninth grader will have the opportunity to meet one-on-one with a trained advisor.  The advisor will use the student’s Individual Learning Plan (ILP) which includes a career interest inventory, together with his/her test results to:
-    Discuss the student’s career aspirations, required education, training, and workforce skills
-    Determine whether the student is on target with attendance, grades, and discipline to meet their goals, and
-    Determine whether the student is on track with recommended courses to prepare them for a successful
    future.
After the Operation Preparation event, students will be asked to register for their 2013-2014 classes.  The series of events leading up to scheduling is intentional in encouraging students to be pro-active in planning for their future.
Parents of current eighth through 11th graders are also invited to attend a parent information meeting about courses and scheduling from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.on Monday, Feb. 25 in the GCHS Auditorium.  (From 5:30 – 6:30 pm:  Teachers of electives, including Career and Tech Center courses, will be available to answer questions about their specific programs.  Starting at 6:30 pm:  Counselors will review scheduling materials and explain the scheduling process.)
