Cats get mauled by Dogs

Now that was not exactly the start to the SEC season that this year’s Kentucky Wildcats were looking for. The young Cats went to Athens and were soundly beaten by a more experienced team that played about as well as can be expected. That just happens sometimes, but what is more concerning is the second consecutive slow start that this time they weren’t able to recover from. Georgia wins 77-70.

After Kentucky shot the ball horribly in the first half, there was hope that the ball wouldfinally start going in the basket in the second as has been the case previously this season. But except for an 11-0 spurt in the second half that got the Cats back in the game, the shooting touch never resurfaced as they could only manage 38% for the day. The issue seemed to be a reluctance to move the ball around to get the defense out of position. It was either a challenged jump shot or individuals forcing the action on their own, rather than the nice passing we have grown accustomed to.

It’s not like the Bulldogs shot the lights out either, but what killed the Wildcats was the constant fouling that sent Georgia to the free throw line 34 times. And to make things worse a 60 something percent shooting team for the year makes all but four freebies. Just too many fouls for a team that can’t exactly afford to have its’ top players on the bench.

I would not normally talk about the announcers that are calling games for Kentucky
because there are generally more important things to talk about. But the duo who called Saturday’s game took announcing to an all-time low. If you watched the game you know that I’m talking about the love affair that Mark Gottfried and his sidekick have with Terrence Jones.

You would think that he is the second coming of Michael Jordan, has just dominated college basketball all season long, and will just run away with the player of the year award. Really?!?

Did you guys do any research or background work on the #11 team in the country Kentucky that has been winning despite the poor play of Jones. Absolutely amazing to me that these guys can get paid to do their job so poorly, especially when they were calling the game for the SEC Network, which you think would mean you know something about the teams.

The Cats return home for a Tuesday night showdown with the Auburn Tigers. The
Tigers have struggled mightily early in the season, but recently beat Florida State prior to conference play. It will be important for the team to get off to a good start and to stay out of foul trouble.
