Do you remember the worship chorus from the 1975 called O, How he Loves You and Me? I sang this song as a young man sitting in church. There is a line in this chorus that goes “He gave His life, what more could he give?”
The laying down of one’s life is one of the ultimate acts of love a person can make. But Jesus was more than just a person and he actually demonstrated his love in a much stronger way that we do not even realize.
Philippians 2:6 teaches us that that Jesus “Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped.” Paul writes here that before Jesus came to earth he had equality with God. This means that Jesus had the same nature as God, he was equal to God. Jesus did not consider that equality as something that he needed to grasp. So Jesus loved us so much that he was willing to “let go” of his God-like status in order to become a baby. That action is a stronger demonstration of love than the laying down of one’s life. So as the holidays pass and we all think about Jesus a little more often, keep in mind what he gave up to in order to live among us. He gave up equality with God.
